The newly developed Valle Catholic Schools Foundation CARES program kicked off its first donor sponsored request focused on enhancing excellence in classroom reading. The generous donor chose to sponsor Mrs. Samantha Gegg’s CARE request for 20 copies of To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. Mrs. Gegg is the Valle Catholic High School English teacher and was searching for a novel that would broaden the importance of identifying and understanding social inequalities and the responsibility of courage humans must utilize in situations of injustice. This literary classic will now be an active part in the high school sophomore English course curriculum where students will have to opportunity to learn about complex challenges in the world related to oppression, corruption, inequality, and bravery. Introducing this novel will also allow students to find new paths to solutions to prevent those introduced themes and create a positive change in the world.

When asked if these books would have a relevant impact on students Mrs. Gegg explained, “These books are perfect, and we cannot wait to share with the Valle Catholic Schools Foundation and Valle community how the students will be able to learn, enjoy, and grow from this literary experience. Thank you to the selfless donor who allowed us this classroom opportunity.”

Sophomore students will begin this literally journey in just a few short weeks. Be sure to check back on this page for updates to learn more about what students will discover from this exciting project.
